Writing Intent Statement:
At Hutton Rudby Primary School we keep the CHILD at the heart of everything we do, as we provide an education which will enable them to be lifelong learners.
We will “prepare our children for life in the big wide world” by giving them the knowledge and skills to:
- be thoughtful and effective listeners who immerse themselves in the opportunities to learn all around them and who are respectful to the views and opinions of others.
- be confident when speaking with their peers and with adults in a wide range of contexts.
- develop a wide and varied vocabulary
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
- be able to write confidently for different purposes and audiences
- enable them to be well-equipped for the next stage of their education.
Writing
In Reception and KS1 we follow a ‘think it, say it, segment it, write it, read it’ approach.
What does this approach mean?
Think it: In Reception and KS1 with support of their teacher children will be given or think of simple and more complex sentences and hold this in their head.
Say it: After thinking of the sentence children will orally rehearse their sentence by saying it out loud including the punctuated needed. Children may do this independently or with support from their teacher.
Segment it: Segmenting for spelling is a key skill for early writers. Children will segment the words they want to write using skills they have been taught in their Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonics sessions.
Write it: Having rehearsed their sentence children will write their sentence using correct spacing between words and correct punctuation.
Read it: Having written their sentence children will use their early reading skills to read their sentence to check it for mistakes and to ensure their sentence makes sense. This also gives them opportunity to perform their work.
In KS2 we follow a ‘think it, say it, write it, read it’ approach.
What does this approach mean?
Think it: In KS2 children will think of their own increasingly complex sentences one sentence at a time using effective vocabulary and a range of sentence structures and punctuation.
Say it: After thinking of the sentence children will orally rehearse their sentence by saying it out loud including the punctuated needed.
Write it: Having rehearsed their sentence children will write their sentence using correct punctation.
Read it: Having written their sentence children read their sentence to check it for mistakes and to ensure their sentence makes sense. They will also take this opportunity to assess whether their sentence could be improved by editing. If this is the case they may repeat the ‘say it, read it’ section of the approach. The read it section of this approach also gives children opportunity to perform their work.

Handwriting
At Hutton Rudby Primary School we teach handwriting using the Nelson Handwriting Scheme. This begins in Reception with children learning pencil control and letter formation. By the end of Year 2 children will have learnt to join their handwriting and by the end of Year 6 children will have developed their own neat, legible and individual style.
Spelling
In Reception and KS1 the spellings that children are exposed to each week are linked to Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised teaching sequence. By the end of Year 2 children will have a weekly spelling test using the KS1 spelling programme of study.
In KS2, children are exposed to spellings linked to the spelling rules and statutory spellings using Spelling Shed, an innovative resource that combines exciting lessons with interactive games and exercises.
