Our Curriculum

Religious Education

REAt Hutton Rudby Primary School we keep the CHILD at the heart of everything we do.

The principle aim of RE is to engage pupils in systematic enquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address, so that they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own.

Our curriculum for Religious Education ensures that all pupils develop 3 types of knowledge:

  1. To know about and understand a range of religions and world views so that they can describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices whilst recognising diversity.
  2. To express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and the impact of religions.
  3. To gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and world views.

RE teaching and learning in Hutton Rudby is split into three strands; Believing, Expressing and Living. These strands enable pupils to…

  • Believing – Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews.
  • Expressing – Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews.
  • Living – Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.

We follow the North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus and use the planned units of work provided by North Yorkshire SACRE. Please see our RE Scheme of Learning and Progression Document for a more detailed overview of our RE Curriculum.

Parental right of withdrawal from Religious Education
We hope that the description above makes it clear that our school’s curriculum for this subject is open, broad and explores a range of religious and non-religious worldviews.  It is not an induction into the Christian faith, or any other.  However, parents have the right to withdraw their child from our Religious Education curriculum on the grounds that they may wish to provide their own.  This would be their responsibility.  If you are a parent/carer and would like a conversation about withdrawing your child from our RE curriculum, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
