Our Reading Vision:

At Hutton Rudby Primary School we keep the CHILD at the heart of everything we do. Reading is an essential life long skill that enables children to achieve their full potential.

Our aims are:

  • To teach every child to become fluent and confident readers.
  • To give children the reading skills necessary to enable their learning in all subjects.
  • That each child grows to enjoy reading, in order to become lifelong readers.

Reading for Pleasure:

Our children have opportunities to engage in a range of reading experiences throughout school, including group reading sessions to develop the children’s reading skills. All children are encouraged to read widely, and celebrate and foster a love of reading through, celebration assemblies, book fairs, and celebration days such as World Book Day and World Poetry Day.

Sharing book

All children take home a reading practice book matched to their current reading level. Alongside this, children will choose their own reading sharing book to enjoy with parents. We recognise the importance of informal book talk and are driven to provide high quality reading texts, tailored to children’s interests.

Reading areas

All classrooms have a designated reading area to ensure children can access a wide range of books easily. These are attractive and inviting areas that are designed to suit the age, interests and needs of the children in the class. Teachers choose books for this area that are appropriately challenging and from a wide range of genres and books are refreshed regularly.

Reading for pleasure time

Throughout the week all children in school have time to read for pleasure within class. In Reception children have access to books and other reading material during their independent learning time. In KS1 and KS2 time is allocated for reading for pleasure time. During this time children can choose what they would like to read for example books, newspapers, magazines or poetry.

Whole class reading texts

Every day in school between 3:00 and 3:15pm, adults read whole class reading texts. During this precious time, books are carefully chosen to expose children to a range of genres, authors and themes.

For our younger children this time will usually consist of an adult reading a whole book, a class reading book, a poem or nursery rhyme.

As the children get older the class will have a class reading book that they will read over time this might be linked to their topic. This book will have varied vocabulary and be challenging literature. They will also have regular exposure to a range of poetry.

Boom Reader

In place of old-fashioned reading diaries, we use an app called Boom Reader. Each read a child does is logged by a parent, teacher or the child themselves. The more they read, the more 'gems' they earn. Gems can be used to decorate each child's individual avatar - their 'Boomer'. We are finding that this has increased the number of children reading at home and the amount that they are reading at home, too. In addition to this, it allows school to keep track on reading over multiple years.
