High quality Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education for all our pupils

The Synergy Schools Federation has incorporated the Jigsaw scheme of work for PSHE. This excellent scheme offers a comprehensive programme for primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, our focused teaching ensures that we provide engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. The Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

The Jigsaw programme also enables us to have a carefully sequenced Relationships, Sex and Health Education curriculum that includes learning about sexual harassment and sexual violence. This is met in an age-appropriate way where we begin with the basics on how we treat each other, consider different forms of relationships, consent, respect for others and issues relating to privacy into the broad based PSHE curriculum to support more specific work on this as children get older. Jigsaw builds in work on relationships, with specific emphasis on this in the first part of the summer term and encourages teachers and children to discuss these issues in a safe learning environment. The lesson content promotes a direct approach of enabling understanding of what a good friendship is, healthy relationships and in upper key stage 2, moving onto what a healthy relationship looks like with a boyfriend or girlfriend (which can include same sex relationships).

Relationships and Sex Education

In November 2022, we consulted with parents and carers on our new Relationships and Sex Education Policy.  The following links provide further information on the rationale for our policy and curriculum in this important area.

Picture News

Our children learn all about the latest news through Picture News. It gives them the chance to talk about current issues and events in a child-friendly, appropriate way. From Reception to Year 6, children love the Picture News resource to learn about current events around the world. We like to record children’s responses in our whole-class ‘CHILD’ books. This is differentiated based on the age group of our children.

Our Picture News resources link directly to various British Values each week.

British Values

At Hutton Rudby Primary School we are committed to providing every child with an excellent education.

We believe in following the Government’s guidelines:

  • “Schools should promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
  • “Pupils must be encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance.”
  • “It is expected that pupils should understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.”

In line with Government requirements, at Hutton Rudby Primary School we have developed the curriculum in order to illustrate our commitment to ‘British Values’.  We value the diversity and differences of all our pupils and celebrate this through our culture, ethos, approach to lessons and our respectful relationships we promote.  Commitment and celebration of diversity makes us collectively stronger, tolerant and respectful to all.

Our curriculum is devoted to British Values. We use the ‘Picture news’ learning resources and encourage transparency and openness in pupil lead discussions about current affairs news topics each week, linked to an individual British Value.

Additionally, in Key Stage 2, pupils this year will undertake a topic about World War 1 and 2 and their impact upon our society, then and now.  Remembrance Day is commemorated and a two minute’s silence is observed. Throughout the school, a number of influential people and eras are studied in our Cornerstones curriculum that supports all aspects of modern day Britain.

We have read the Government’s Paper on “Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in Schools” (November 2014). It outlines the Departmental advice for maintained schools from the Department for Education. Download the document
